Treatment - Sclerotherapy

Treatment

On your first visit to the clinic you will be given a thorough examination of your legs and a relevant medical history will be taken. This may include the use of a hand-held doppler machine. (This is not invasive).

A comprehensive explanation of the available treatments will be given to you and you will be able to ask as many questions as you wish. Possible side effects are also explained and also the cost of treatment. Sclerotherapy is our treatment of choice. It has been in use for many years and continues to be the most effective and economic treatment for leg veins.

Sclerotherapy is the injection of a sclerosing agent, usually dextrose and saline in the affected veins.

This has an irritative effect on the vein walls producing a fibrous cord called sclerosis. This causes closure of the vein so that the blood will circulate through other healthy veins in the legs.

Usually larger veins are treated first followed by medium and small ones.

This is performed in the clinic and you may return to your usual activities.

You will probably experience a short interval of mild discomfort.

In some cases of very large varicose veins you may be referred for a surgical opinion, though many patients are now choosing the less invasive Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) instead of surgery. See EVLT.

Prevention

*Exercise is recommended, especially walking, cycling and swimming.

*Watch your weight.

*Wear lower heels,  especially in a standing job.

*Avoid sunburns, use a good  sunscreen.

*Do not wear tight clothing (eg. girdles)

*Wear graduated  compression, support socks  or pantyhose when  recommended

These stockings have higher compression at the ankle helping to prevent the blood
flowing back down the leg. They help improve circulation and relieve symptoms of tired heavy legs.

They are available at the clinic in many fashion styles and colours for both women and men.
